This four‑part course on Hand Surgery Coding provides a clear, anatomy‑based approach to coding orthopaedic and nerve‑related procedures. Learners will strengthen foundational anatomical knowledge and apply it directly to accurate ICD‑10 and CPT code selection. The program covers incision and excision techniques, repair and reconstruction procedures, fracture management, arthrodesis, arthroscopy, amputations, and hardware removal. A dedicated module on nerve anatomy and procedures guides learners through coding decompressions, transections, repairs, and transfers. By the end of the course, participants will confidently interpret operative documentation and assign precise, compliant codes across a wide range of orthopaedic and nerve interventions.
Learning Objectives
Part 1: Anatomy, ICD-10, Incisions, & Excisions
-Basic Hand Coding Anatomy/ Identify and define key anatomical terms and their relevance to medical coding.
-Apply anatomical knowledge to accurately code medical procedures and diagnoses.
-Extrapolate incision and excisional procedures, including CPT guidelines and bundling edits.
-Classify benign, malignant, and radical resection procedures in orthopaedic oncology, and understand their respective coding.
Part 2: Repair, Revision, and/or Reconstruction
-Basic Hand Coding Anatomy/ Identify and define key anatomical terms and their relevance to medical coding.
-Apply anatomical knowledge to accurately code medical procedures and diagnoses.
-Compare various repair and reconstruction techniques and their coding requirements.
-Differentiate primary and secondary repairs.
Part 3: Fractures, Arthrodesis, Arthroscopy, Amputation
-Apply anatomical knowledge to accurately code medical procedures and diagnoses.
-Accurately code various fracture treatments, including debridements and closed and open reductions.
-Explain removal of hardware based on the type of hardware removed and the anatomic location.
Part 4: Nerves
-Basic Nerve Coding Anatomy/ Identify and define key anatomical terms and their relevance to medical coding.
-Apply anatomical knowledge to accurately code medical procedures and diagnoses.
-Accurately code various nerve decompression, transection, repair, and transfer procedures.
-Compare various nerve repair techniques and their coding requirements.
